three reasons you should do an engagement session with your wedding photographer

May 7, 2019

Couples doing an engagement session with their wedding photographer is a very common thing, especially if your photographer is local. But there are a lot of situations that cause couples to choose not to, such as:

  1. I’m planning my wedding out of state, or I’m hiring a photographer from out of state.
  2. I want to spend more money on my wedding photographer, so I’m cutting costs by choosing a cheaper photographer for engagements.
  3. I am having a family friend do my engagement photos.
  4. I don’t need engagement photos, because I don’t want to send photos with my wedding announcements

These are all valid reasons! But I want to talk about why I think you should still do an engagement session with your wedding photographer anyways. In fact, I find that it is so beneficial that I include a complimentary engagement session with all of my packages. Because of this, I’ve had couples choose to take advantage of the session even if they already had a family friend take their photos, or even though they aren’t sending pictures with their announcements. Here’s why:

Sure, maybe you met with your photographer before booking, but going out and shooting together helps you get to know each other so much more. It gives you the opportunity to get comfortable with each other and in front of the camera, so it feels like you’re meeting up with a friend on your wedding day. Instead of a just another hired professional/stranger. You don’t need to feel like friends with all of your vendors, but feeling comfortable with your photographer makes for a more fun and relaxing time. Because trust me, you’re going to be around them all day long.

The majority of couples are not professional models in any way. For some, it’s often their first experience with getting professional pictures taken! Doing an engagement session before the wedding day is basically a practice round for your bride and groom portraits. On your session, you’ll learn how to pose and by the end you’ll start to fall into the poses naturally. This makes portrait time on the wedding day go so much smoother! Especially if there’s a situation (not uncommon), where the timeline is slightly behind and it cuts into your portrait time. If you’re already skilled in the posing department, we’ll be able to get more photos in a shorter period of time.

Engagement sessions are so much fun! It’s basically a date night where you get to snuggle up and kiss on your fiance for an hour (with me as your third wheel, of course). But in all seriousness, it really does feel like a date. You may as well plan on some fro-yo afterwards to top it off! Even if you don’t NEED the photos, it’s still fun to have them! It’s awesome to look back on them later in your marriage and remember how you felt while you were engaged. So in the end, even if you don’t use them, you still had a blast, got in some great practice, and left with adorable photos that showcase your love.

So let’s book that engagement session!
