How to Edit Phone Photos in Lightroom Mobile

Lightroom Mobile can look a little bit intimidating if you’re an inexperienced photo editor – but let me assure you, once you get familiar with it, it’s totally user friendly and super effective! I recommend starting with presets so you don’t have to learn the ins and outs of editing (if you don’t want to). Whatever presets you purchase or download will likely come with the instructions on how to get them set up in your app. Most presets designed for phone photos will not require much, if any, “tweaking.” But I have imported my desktop presets that were designed for RAW images (a whole different lesson), so I have to do some more adjustments on my phone.

My favorite presets (and the ones that I use for my professional photography) are the Mastin Labs Fujicolor Original pack – available here:

I exported this preset to create my own mobile version, which is what I’m using in this example.

Step 1

Open Lightroom and select the image you’d like to edit from your camera roll.

Step 2

Along the bottom of the screen, you have all your different editing tools. Scroll to the right and select “presets.” This will pull up the presets you’ve imported and you can choose which one you’d like to use! I’ve selected Mastin Labs Fuji 160NS – N.

Step 3

Adjustments! Click on the check mark on the bottom right of the screen and that will officially apply the preset. Then along the bottom, scroll back over so you can see “Light” and “Color” – These are the only adjustments I typically need to make. Under “Light,” I’m simply bringing up the exposure. Under “Color,” I’m adjusting the white balance (which is the overall warmth of the image). I’m bringing up the temperature significantly and the tint just a little bit.

Step 4

Export! You’re done. Click on the arrow up at the top of the screen, and click “Export to Camera Roll.” And that’s it! It’s as simple as that. I definitely encourage you to play around with all the different sliders to see how each one changes the photo. But the beauty is that you don’t have to if you don’t want to – You can get away with only knowing about exposure and white balance!

Before and After

The most satisfying thing about editing an image is viewing the before and after! When you’re in Lightroom mobile, if you hold down on the image it will pull up the “before.” When you release it will go back to where you were in the editing process. I love checking out the before after each step just to see how things are moving along.  Here is the final before and after of this image:

That just went from boring phone photo to “wow, okay, I see you!” and that’s the best part! Happy editing friends!
